What Is Masseter Enlargement?
The masseter (chewing muscle) can change the shape of one’s face if it is enlarged. For some women, enlarged masseters may create a masculine or “chubby cheek” appearance.
When this muscle enlarges, the shape of your face can change – sometimes quite dramatically. For women, this presents the issue of appearing somewhat masculine.
How Can I Shrink My Masseters?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is successfully used to shrink the masseter muscle by reducing it’s exertion. This reduced force allows the muscle to obtain a normal size and shape. Results last 4 to 6 months.
What Causes Masseter Enlargement?
Normal muscle movement does not cause masseter enlargement – though if you chew gum or nuts often with a lot of force, chewing alone can be the cause. The more common causes are teeth grinding and/or unconscious clenching of the jaw.
Anxiety and stress can cause a lot of people to clinch their jaw or grind their teeth. It’s not until they see the shape of their jaw become more square that they realize they are clenching or grinding.
